Lumiio: Learning how to think.

The Project

Lumiio is an adaptive learning platform for tablet and PC that grows with students from early childhood through university. It is not an exercise app and it is not an online tutor. It is a system designed to build, over time, a person’s ability to reason, understand and learn independently.

The idea comes from a simple observation. Over the past thirty years, neuroscience and cognitive psychology have uncovered a great deal about how the human brain actually learns, yet almost none of it has made its way into everyday teaching. We know that memory strengthens when it is actively recalled, not when it is passively reread. We know that spreading study sessions over time works better than a single intensive block. We know that a seven year old and a fifteen year old do not just know different things; they think in qualitatively different ways. We know that emotions are not a distraction from learning. They are part of it.

Existing educational platforms such as Squirrel AI, ALEKS, Khan Academy and DreamBox use artificial intelligence to decide which exercise to present next. They do it well and produce measurable results. But their goal is always the same: help a student master a specific piece of content. None of them asks the more important question: how do we build a student who can tackle problems they have never seen before?

How It Works

Lumiio builds an individual cognitive profile for every student and updates it in real time. This is not a simple pass or fail record. It is a map that includes the level of mastery for each concept, the rate at which the student forgets, the cognitive load they are carrying at any given moment, and their ability to judge for themselves how well they have understood something. Based on this profile, the system does not just adapt content. It adapts method. For the same concept, it might choose a visual exercise, a guided dialogue or an open ended problem, depending on what works for that particular student at that particular moment.

Every session draws on techniques that research has shown to be effective: active recall of previous material to consolidate memory, mixing different topics to develop the ability to discriminate between them, and scheduled breaks to activate the brain’s diffuse mode. That last one matters more than people think. Diffuse mode is the unconscious processing that happens when we stop concentrating, and it is essential for deep learning. Every existing educational platform ignores it. Lumiio builds it into the architecture.

The system is designed to transform as the student grows. From ages two to seven it serves as a tool for parents, built around play and guided exploration. From seven to eleven it becomes a full adaptive platform for foundational skills. From eleven to sixteen it develops abstract and critical thinking. From sixteen onward it becomes a self directed learning environment where the student is in control and the system acts as an advisor. The ultimate goal is for the student to no longer need the system at all.

One thing worth underlining: the teacher is not replaced. Teachers receive a real time dashboard showing who needs help, who is ready to move forward and where recurring difficulties lie. The platform takes over the mechanical work so that teachers can do what only a human being can do.

On privacy, our position is firm. Zero biometric surveillance. No facial recognition, no sensors, no cameras. The student’s cognitive state is inferred entirely from interaction data: response times, error patterns, help requests. This is not only an ethical choice. It is a structural competitive advantage in the European market, where GDPR makes surveillance based approaches unworkable.

The Market

The global EdTech market exceeds 340 billion dollars and is growing at 8 to 10 percent annually. The adaptive learning segment is among the fastest growing. In China alone, the market for intelligent educational devices is projected to reach 20 billion dollars in 2026. The leading players are Chinese (Squirrel AI with 24 million students, iFLYTEK serving 130 million users) or American (ALEKS, DreamBox, Khanmigo). None of them is natively designed for the European market, where GDPR makes the mass collection of biometric data impractical. The space for a European, privacy first platform covering early childhood through university is essentially empty.

What We Need

We are seeking a seed investment of €1,800,000 to cover 24 months of development: a core technical and scientific team, construction of the knowledge graph, pilot studies with real schools, and launch of the first version focused on the 7 to 11 age group with mathematics and reading comprehension. Our target at the end of the seed phase is 15,000 active students, approximately €2 million in annual recurring revenue, and validated efficacy data from real classrooms. That is the foundation for a Series A.
